The age of the Typewriter
Introduction of Moveable Type
And the Introduction of Moveable Type
Hello! My name is Johannes Gutenberg and I was responsible for the creation of moveable type in the west!
Around 1450 I created something called the Gutenberg Press which allowed for books to be printed. So much easier than copying by hand.
Some say it one of the most important inventions of all time, let me show you how it worked.
I was born in a vee place called Mainz, Germany in 1400.
Moveable type had actually been in asia since around 1000 AD
Paper Was postioned underneath the block ready to be printed on. Only one sheet could be printed at a time

Lever Cranked a large screw which applied the printing block onto paper
Screw Allowed for the printing block to ne applied onto the paper
Printing Block The block contained the contents of a page reversed so that it would appear upright when printed
Drag the characters out to spell your own name and see what it looks like in blackletter
TYPES OF THE TIME BLACKLETTER
And the Age of the Typewriter
I created the solar compass and the equatorial sextant. I also thought that printing type could be easier, and so in 1829, I patented the first typewriter.
I’m from Petersham, Massachusetts, in the USA. I was born in 1792, and over the course of my life I’ve invented a few things.
Burt’s typewriter took longer to print a letter than it did to write a word
Hi! I’m William, Well I’m actually WIlliam Austin Burt if we’re getting formal. Some say that I’m the father of the typewriter
It looked more like a pinball machine than a typical typewriter, let me show you what I mean.
Button When pressed, the Typographer printed the selected character
Click on each part to find out more, find all three!
Dial Controlled which line the typographer would print on
Lever Deteremined which letter would be printed by pointing at a particular letter on a strip
Monospaced fonts, like Courier, are all the same width. In a typewriter this was important to space each letter apart
TYPES OF THE TIME SLAB SERIF // MONOSPACED
TYPES OF THE TIME SANS SERIF
Sans serif typefaces like Helvetica have become incredibly popular over the last century and are used everywhere in the digital age
And the first Digital Computer
I was born on October 4th, 1903 in New York, but my family was actually from Bulgaria.
Atanasoff’s original computer didn’t even have a screen
Delving into electrical engineering and mathematics at a young age, I went on to develop the Atanasoff-Berry Computer in 1937.
Hello! I’m John Atanasoff, and i had a big part to play in the computer you're using right now. I created the first digital computer!
This has since developed to the device you’re using now! And who said old people were terrible with technology?
Organised a system in which computation and memory are separated.
Performed all calculations using electronics rather than wheels, ratchets, or mechanical switches
The Atanasoff-Berry computer was the first to have these three attributes. This would set the standard for all computers to come. Click each icon to find out more!
Used binary digits to represent all numbers and data
Pretty complicated eh!
